Sky Quality Meters

Amy was awarded a Freeman Fellows Graduate Research Fellowship Award in 2023 for the installation of a permanent Sky Quality Meter station at Texas State University’s Freeman Ranch. In collaboration with the Hays County Friends of the Night Sky and Dark Sky Texas, this project will be the first permanent sky quality meter in a network of sky quality meters in Hays County. With a network of meters, sky quality will be monitored over time and space to better understand how sky brightness changes over time in the region.

At our

At our research center, we are dedicated to studying the various effects of light pollution and providing valuable insights into practical ways to promote dark skies. We strive to uncover the many ways in which excessive artificial light can negatively impact our environment and our health, both directly and indirectly. Through our extensive research, we aim to raise awareness of the dangers of light pollution and provide actionable solutions to mitigate its negative effects. By studying the patterns and trends of light pollution, we hope to better understand how to preserve natural darkness as an essential resource for both humans and wildlife. Our research also explores the potential economic benefits of promoting dark skies, such as tourism and energy savings. Overall, our team of passionate researchers is dedicated to understanding the complex issues surrounding light pollution in order to create a better and more sustainable future for all.
